Being a Product Owner

PO Wall

When you see a job posted online, you open the job specification, read through the various responsibilities and gauge how you think your skillset might apply. After some deliberation with friends and family, you might put yourself forward. But a job spec only goes so far in explaining what the job will look like day-to-day. In order to help you take that plunge and apply for one of our US or UK roles, the PO team here at FanDuel decided to write a piece about what it is like for us being part of a rapidly growing company within the exciting industry of online gaming in the US.

Collaboration is at the heart of everything we do

Being a team that elicits requirements from across the business means we are frequently interacting with a wide array of stakeholders from a variety of disciplines. Most important is our relationship with our world-class Product, Design/UX and Engineering teams. As a Product Owner at FanDuel, we work closely with these teams to help chase down big opportunities and solve complex problems by bringing together the combined knowledge of our business teams and ensuring all context is understood. This allows us to make the best decisions when it comes to building our products and features.

Our career path and practice is always evolving

The PO team has grown over 100% during the last two years, and we are continuing to scale alongside our Engineering colleagues. This has meant we have had to evolve how we work in order to meet those needs. Our career path has moved away from a more generalised approach to business analysis to specialising in the highest impact areas: Product, Technical and Enterprise analysis. This not only allows POs to forge their own path with different options to develop their careers but also allows our stakeholders to better understand the services we offer.

We are always looking for new POs to help develop our team and help drive new/best practices. With a flexible delivery framework, our approach enables POs to determine the best fit for their needs. We offer a supportive analysis community with experience from a wide range of industries, working together to support each other on different initiatives. We work as a tight community, providing guidance in areas such as stakeholder identification, workshop techniques and analysis documentation.

No two days are the same

A well-used cliché, I know — but here at FanDuel, it really is true. With us, you will get to fully utilise your own product owner toolkit, set stretch objectives to develop yourself and try out new and exciting approaches to analysis. With a wide variety of products and technical opportunities to work on as a PO, you can really stretch yourself and grow your career.
