Our roster has an opening with your name on it.
The fastest Sportsbook in the industry doesn't happen by accident.
We're looking for a Software Engineering Director to lead the teams behind the performance, reliability and architecture that power every customer experience across FanDuel Sportsbook.
This is a role for someone who loves solving hard engineering problems at scale. You'll lead multiple engineering teams responsible for app performance and stability, observability, and the modular architecture that enables hundreds of engineers across multiple geographies to build and ship quickly, safely and with confidence.
Your mission is simple: make every Sportsbook experience faster, more reliable and easier to evolve. Making every moment for our customers… more.
You'll work across iOS, Android, Web, React Native and BFF services, partnering with engineers, product leaders and senior stakeholders to define technical direction, remove delivery friction and tackle the problems that don't have obvious answers.
This is a hands-on leadership role. You'll coach exceptional engineers, shape engineering strategy, make difficult technical decisions, and create the environment where great teams can do the best work of their careers.
If you're excited by leading at scale, building platforms that enable others to move faster, and raising the engineering bar across an entire organisation, we'd love to talk.
THE GAME PLAN
Everyone on our team has a part to play
- Lead multiple engineering teams across two strategic missions, Performance & Observability and Modularisation & Operational Efficiency, setting a clear technical vision for each and holding delivery to it.
- Own the performance of the Sportsbook app end to end, covering app launch, crash rate, page load, tab switching, responsiveness and frame rate, driving measurable improvement against customer-facing targets on both iOS and Android, with an intensified focus on Android.
- Set the strategy for data observability, ensuring the organisation has trustworthy, single-source-of-truth instrumentation (for example consolidated Datadog RUM, error and crash tracking) to detect performance issues before customers feel them and to act on them fast.
- Drive foundational architecture improvements, including the React Native New Architecture migration and high-performance UI components (Formation), delivered safely and gradually without disruptive rebuilds.
- Lead the modularisation of the Sportsbook codebase, restructuring a monolithic React Native app into a well-bounded, modular NX monorepo that gives teams clear ownership and lets change land safely for all front-end teams across the Sportsbook organisation, spread over multiple geographies.
- Champion preventative tooling and regression detection so that performance is validated on every release and regressions are caught before they reach customers.
- Establish long-term performance visibility through custom metrics pipelines, session-level responsiveness metrics and consistent org-wide tracking capability, distinguishing genuine degradation from noise and demonstrating sustained improvement.
- Reduce operational effort, run-cost and process friction, prioritising high-confidence improvements with measurable delivery or efficiency gains.
- Partner with Product Engineering leadership and platform teams to align the Core Apps roadmap with product priorities, running the dependency intake and early-engagement model so capabilities are shaped at inception rather than bolted on late.
- Advocate, own and drive predictability through Operational Excellence and transparency through data and KPIs, measuring both customer-facing performance and internal delivery and efficiency metrics.
- Ensure the right people are in the right job through hiring, performance management, creating leadership opportunities, and leading with empathy.
- Ensure effective operational support and on-call for the customer experience your teams own, treating performance and stability incidents with the same urgency as any customer-facing issue.
- Deliver architecturally sound solutions for complex challenges, balancing build-vs-buy decisions and designing for scale, reliability and multi-year horizons.
- Communicate and drive strategic initiatives (3 to 5 year horizons) around mobile platform evolution, observability strategy and modular architecture patterns.
- Exhibit best behaviour and exemplify our company principles, fostering a culture of performance, quality and collaboration.
- Be responsible for expenditure and ensure you spend money effectively, recognising areas of savings or waste in tooling, infrastructure and vendor services.
THE STATS
What we're looking for in our next teammate
- 10+ Years in a software role with 5+ years managing SE team(s). Ideally some experience managing managers.
- Strong experience with mobile application platforms (iOS, Android, Web) and modern cross-platform frameworks (React Native), with a deep understanding of mobile performance challenges and what engineering teams need to be successful.
- Demonstrable track record of improving application performance, stability and reliability for high-traffic, consumer-facing products, including app launch, crash rate, responsiveness and page load.
- Experience with observability and monitoring at scale (for example Datadog RUM, Sentry, Crashlytics) and building the instrumentation that underpins data-driven engineering decisions.
- Experience leading large-scale architecture modernisation or modularisation, for example monorepo/NX restructures, decomposing monoliths, and establishing clear module ownership across many contributing teams.
- Experience designing and delivering technology solutions for consumer facing products in a high energy, ambiguous and scrutinised environment.
- Previous hands-on experience developing highly available, fault tolerant, resilient applications and transactional platforms from requirements gathering to delivery and support.
- Experience defining and implementing software delivery best practices, agile delivery methodologies and a proven track-record of continuously improving delivery pace while maintaining quality.
- Experience supporting software systems in production including on-call support with a relentless focus on improving the stability, availability and performance of those systems.
- Delivery of technology solutions working with partner development teams via near-shoring/off-shoring or 3rd party development.
- Experience managing managers.
- Experience defining and executing a strategic technical vision for performance, observability and platform architecture.
What You Can Expect
